[서트, 리비아=AP/KNS] 무아마르 카다피의 고향인 서트를 점령하기 위해 반란군이 새롭게 진격한다는 소식을 듣고 20일(현지시각) 도시를 떠나기 위해 매트리스와 물주전자 등을 싣고 트럭에 탄 가족들의 피난 행렬이 이어졌다.

리비아 새 정부군 지휘관 바시르 아와즈가 20일 전한 바에 따르면 반란군은 하루 동안 벌어진 전투 끝에 카다피 지지자들의 근거지인 사바의 대부분 지역을 장악하게 되었다. 아와즈 지휘관은 이어 이 지역의 카다피 지지자들 중 대부분은 전투를 벌이는 대신 도시를 달아났으나 그의 군대 중 3명, 그리고 카다피 지지자 19명이 사망했다고 전했다.

지휘관은 새 정부군이 리비아 남부의 사막 지역 전체와 알제리아와 니제르와 맞닿은 국경 지대까지 점령하려면 앞으로 일주일 정도가 더 소요될 것이라고 밝혔다. 카다피의 아들들과 일부 카다피 정권 관계자들은 니제르로 도피해있다.

앞서 서트 지역 주민들은 마을을 포위한 카다피 지지군이 주민들의 피난을 막고 있으며 끊임없이 이어지는 로켓 무기 발사와 NATO의 폭격으로 생활 여건이 악화되고 있다고 전했다.

SIRTE, Libya (AP) -- Families in pickup trucks stacked with mattresses and jugs of water fled Moammar Gadhafi's hometown of Sirte Tuesday ahead of an expected new push by revolutionary forces to seize the city, as the anti-Gadhafi forces claimed progress in the battle for a city in the remote southern desert.

A commander of new government's forces said late Tuesday they were in control of most of the Gadhafi desert stronghold of Sabha after a day of fighting. The commander, Bashir Ahwaz, said most of the tribesmen loyal to Gadhafi fled the city instead of putting up a fight, but three of his men and 19 pro-Gadhafi tribesmen were killed.

He said it would take another week for his forces to take control of all of Libya's southern desert and its b　　orders with Algeria and Niger. Several 　　groups of officials 　　from Gadhafi's regime, as well as one of the outsted dictator's sons, have fled to Niger.

Earlier, residents fleeing Sirte said they had been living under a state of siege with Gadhafi's forces preventing them 　　from leaving, while living conditions deteriorated and the city came under constant rocket fire and NATO bombardment.
