World Bank says China needs sweeping reforms
BEIJING (AP) — The World Bank and a team of Chinese researchers say Beijing needs to make sweeping ¡¡¡¡changes to reduce the government's role in the economy if it is to keep growing steadily and avoid crises.
The recommendations Monday are in line with pledges in the Communist Party's latest five-year development plan to promote market-style reform.
But their emphasis on building up China's private sector is likely to clash with factions that favor a dominant role for state industry.
The report comes as a new generation of Chinese leaders p repares to take power amid a debate over what course development should take as Beijing tries to boost domestic consumption and reduce reliance on exports and investment.
