[카이로=AP/] 호스니 무바라크 전 이집트 대통령 당시 부통령이었던 오마르 술래이만(75)이 이집트의 군부의 지지를 업고 대통령 선거에 입후보했다.

술래이만 전 부통령은 이슬람교도가 이집트를 지배하는 것을 막고 취약한 치안상태와 경제악화에 좌절감을 맞보고 있는 이집트인들에게 강력한 후보로 등장했다.

많은 이집트인들은 무바라크 정권을 무너트린 젊은 혁명가들에 대한 기대가 무너져 버려 무바라크 퇴진 이후 잠시 동안의 희열이 사라지고 범죄와 경제악화로 인한 생활고등 여러 사회적 혼란상에 불안해하고 있다.

술래이만의 등장에 대해 국회의 다수당을 차지한 이슬람 형제단은 다시 혁명군의 이미지를 부각시키려고 시도하면서 술래이만의 등장은 무바라크 시대로 돌아가는 것이라고 주장하고 8일 자신들의 웹 사이트에서 “No"라는 글과 함께 붉은 색으로 줄을 그은 술래이만의 사진을 올렸다.

그러나 많은 온건파 이집트인들은 이슬람 형제단이나 이슬람교의 원리주의 신봉자들이 이집트를 이란과 같은 신정국가로 만들지 않을 가 우려하면서 술래이만의 대통령 후보가 어필하고 있다.

Egypt military backs Mubarak's VP for president

CAIRO (AP) — Hosni Mubarak's former vice president and spy chief Omar Suleiman will have the behind-the-scenes backing of Egypt's ruling generals and the state media's powerful propaganda machine in his bid to succeed his longtime mentor for the nation's highest office, according to officials with firsthand knowledge.

Suleiman, 75, will set out as a formidable presidential challenger to stop the Islamists 　　from taking over the country and may also try to sell himself as a safe pair of hands for those increasingly frustrated over tenuous security and a worsening economy.

Many Egyptians have since lost faith with the young revolutionaries who engineered Mubarak's stunning overthrow.

The euphoria over his ouster soon gave way to frustration as Egyptians struggled to cope with a surge in violent crime, the fallout 　from a f　altering economy and seemingly endless strikes, street protests and sit-ins that disrupted their daily life.

Faced with the prospect of a Suleiman presidency, the Muslim Brotherhood as the dominant Islamist party in parliament is trying to project itself again as a revolutionary force.

The Brotherhood said Suleiman's entry into the race was a throwback to the days of Mubarak, who cracked down on the 　　group for most of his 29 years in office. The Brotherhood's official website posted on Sunday a picture of Suleiman crossed out in red with the word "no" over it.

His candidacy could appeal to the significant sector of moderate Egyptians who fear that an Islamist 　　from the Brotherhood or the Salafis would turn Egypt into an Iranian-style theocracy.
